The wax treatment provides three key advantages: enhanced durability by protecting fibers from fraying, water resistance to keep moisture from soaking into the laces, and improved knot security. The tacky nature of the wax creates friction, meaning your shoes are less likely to come untied during the day.
This mostly depends on your shoe type. Round waxed laces (typically 1.5mm–2mm) are the traditional choice for formal dress shoes and Oxfords. Flat waxed laces (5mm–7mm) are more common for work boots and heritage "service" boots, as they provide a wider surface area for a more rugged aesthetic and a comfortable, secure lockdown.
High-quality waxed laces may feel slightly tacky to the touch when new, but they shouldn't leave a significant residue on your hands or shoes. This tackiness is actually what helps the knot stay secure. Over time, the wax settles into the fibers, providing a smooth, polished patina.
