The most accurate way is to measure your existing laces. However, a general rule for dress shoes is based on the number of eyelet pairs:
2–3 pairs: 60cm (24")
4–5 pairs: 75cm (30")
5–6 pairs: 80cm (32")
6+ pairs: 90cm+ (36"+)
Using a lace that is too long results in unsightly loops that drag, while too short makes a "straight bar" lacing pattern nearly impossible.
Waxed cotton is the gold standard for formal footwear. The light paraffin coating serves two purposes: it protects the fibers from moisture and friction, and it provides a slight "grip" that prevents your knots from slipping. Aesthetically, the wax provides a subtle sheen that complements polished calfskin or cordovan leather.
Round laces are traditional for Oxfords and Derbys because they fit cleanly into smaller, punched eyelets and offer a minimalist profile. Flat laces are more common in casual boots or sneakers, though a very thin, high-density flat lace can provide a modern, "bespoke" look for contemporary dress shoes.
This is usually due to the "granny knot" (an unbalanced knot) or using synthetic, low-friction polyester laces. Switching to a high-quality waxed cotton lace creates more internal friction within the knot. For maximum security, we recommend the Parisian Knot or a standard bow knot for a symmetrical, stay-fast finish.
For the most formal settings (black tie or conservative business), your laces should match your leather color.
